Key Stage 2,3 & 4

At the Sylvia Young Theatre School, the interests, ideas and strengths of the students are accommodated within a structured yet flexible Art curriculum.

The department offers a broad range of art-making activities and aims to provide students with the necessary skills and confidence to fulfill their creative ideas. Students are encouraged to draw on their personal experience, though emphasis on direct observation is paramount.

Course Structure

Through years 6-9, students are able to gain experience in the use of a variety of different materials through the practices of:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Printmaking
  • Sculpture
  • Design

Basic skills are developed through these practices. Projects are thematic with critical/historical study forming an important element.

In years 10 and 11, we follow the Edexcel GCSE Art and Design syllabus. During the course the students are required to complete two units of coursework and an externally set assignment. Sketchbooks/working notebooks are used for visual research, critical study and the exploration and development of ideas. These are an essential element of the course and must accompany each component.

The GCSE Art exhibition, held at the school during the summer term is moderated by an external examiner The Art exhibition is opened up to the wider school community opening dialogue, positive response and motivating younger students.

The Art Department at the Sylvia Young Theatre School has a long tradition of success. Since 2002 candidates have achieved GCSE 100% pass rate at A*-C.
