Assessment & Recording >

Assessment at the Sylvia Young Theatre School supports individual students in the achievement of his or her full learning potential and fosters the development of self esteem and personal responsibility. This takes place with the involvement of staff, pupils and parents. The Sylvia Young Theatre School recognizes that assessment does not need to be in the form of formal examinations but can be a progression within the school maximizing the potential of each individual student.

Vocational Assessment and recording

Internal assessment and recording

Consistent record keeping by all teachers allows the effective monitoring of students progress and the regular evaluation of teaching content/styles/methods
Good practice encourages:

Realistic expectations of achievement

  1. Individual progress throughout all areas of the vocational curriculum
  2. Internal assessment as an ongoing process leading to progress through dance class levels. External dance examinations are not taken within the school. This allows pupils to progress throughout the levels within the school regardless of absences due to professional work and allows progression to a much higher level in the areas where pupils show the most aptitude. It must be noted that despite no formal dance qualifications being completed in school many students attain full scholarships at high level dance colleges on leaving the school and are in no way disadvantaged
  3. Internal assessment as an ongoing process in drama
  4. Internal assessment in terms of grade setting for speech

Teacher records are used to inform reporting both formal and informal, to pupils, parents and school management team.

External assessment and recording

Pupils in all years are assessed externally in LAMDA examinations progressing through grades in both Acting and Verse and Prose.
Examinations take place in December, March and July and all pupils take at least one grade during the year.
