Assessment and Reporting
Assessment is the obtaining, analyzing and interpreting evidence for use by both pupils and teachers to enable the review, planning and improvement of learning. It is fully integrated with the delivery of the curriculum and is an essential component of classroom practice.
The Sylvia Young Theatre School recognizes and encourages the following as an example of good practice:

Assessment and recording (Academic)
Internal assessment and recording
Good practice encourages:
- Common assessment marks/grades recorded in teacher mark books
- Homework grades recorded in teacher mark books
- Internal examinations during July of each year for years 6,7,8,9 and 10 in all subjects except where there is external assessment
- Internal examinations during January of each year as mock examinations for year 10 in Media and internal assessments in Expressive arts
- nternal examinations during January of each year as mock examinations for year 11 in all subjects taken
Teacher records are used to inform reporting both formal and informal, to pupils, parents and school management team.
External assessment and recording
Examinations
Pupils in year 6,9,10 and 11 are assessed externally in public examinations as follows:
- Year 6 SATs examinations are taken in May of each year in the subjects; English, Maths and Science
- Year 9 SATs examinations are taken in may of each year in the subjects; English, Maths, Science and ICT
- Year 10 GCSEs taken in the summer term in the subjects; Expressive arts, Media and Science
- Year 11 GCSEs taken in the summer term in all studied subjects
Assessment is often a combination of coursework, module tests and final examination.
