Key Stage 2

Year 6 Teacher: David Evans

At the Sylvia Young Theatre School expectations in Y6 are extremely high, with pupils achieving outstanding KS2 SATs results. The curriculum is wide and varied ensuring all students achieve their full potential

English and Mathematics

The school is guided by the Primary Framework featuring the Literacy Framework and Mathematics framework.:

All expectations, learning objectives, units of work, assessment and resources are found within these frameworks.

The core text books in Y6 to support the delivery of English and Mathematics are the Rising Stars publications, ‘Achieve Level 4’ and ‘Achieve Level 5’.

There is also a Rigby mathematics scheme available to support delivery where relevant and appropriate.

Pupils are also set Reading Comprehension tasks throughout the year, mainly as homework, although these are discussed in class. Once a fortnight the Pupils are taken to Marylebone Library, as well as being encouraged to use the school library for personal reading and research. 15 minutes a day is set aside for silent sustained reading. Pupils are also regularly set extended pieces of writing often linked to other areas of the curriculum, in particular humanities.

HOMEWORK

Homework is set once a week and should take approximately 1 hour to complete. Tasks relate to the current topic being studied. Pupils are also expected to read daily to develop higher order reading skills and improve comprehension.

NUMERACY

Lessons are based around the Numeracy strategy with mental maths being a key strand throughout every lesson. Pupils are taught problem solving as a separate lesson once a week by the Key Stage 3 maths teacher. However, problem solving is part and parcel of all maths topics and this is addressed within all topics. Homework is set on a weekly basis connected to the topic and Pupils are encouraged to practice their mental skills. Topics include:

  • Multiplication and Division
  • Fractions and Decimals
  • Ratio and Proportion
  • Percentages
  • Probability
  • Data Handling
  • Co-ordinates, Translations and Rotations
  • Area and Perimeter
  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Shape and Space
  • Properties of Number
  • Negative numbers
  • Angles
  • Measures
  • Data Handling
  • Revision

HOMEWORK

Homework is set once a week and should take approximately 1 hour to complete. Tasks generally relate to the current topic being studied. However they can also involve topics previously taught as an opportunity to re-visit a variety of concepts.

SCIENCE

Science is taught using the New Star Science Scheme and the CGP KS2 Science Study Books. Lessons involve a combination of research, investigation and observation. Topics include:

 

  • Seeing Things
  • Food Chains
  • Interdependence and adaptation
  • Micro Organisms
  • Dissolving
  • Changing Circuits
  • Forces in Action
  • Reversible and Irreversible changes.

During the year key concepts from units in previous years will be re-visited as part of the Y6 revision programme to help assess the pupils’ levels at the end of Y6.

HOMEWORK

Although the main focus drive for homework is literacy and numeracy, science will from time to time feature as appropriate.

HUMANITIES

This is taught through focussed teaching sessions, research and investigations. This takes the form of topic work with either a geographical or historical focus. This is supported by BBC Publications and DVDsn and the internet. Current topics include: 

  • Weather and Climate
  • Mexico
  • World Environmental Change
  • What’s in the News
  • Using the Land
  • Timelines
  • Britain Since 1948 

ICT

ICT is taught as a separate subject by KS3 staff, although pupils are regularly encouraged to use their skills in other areas of the curriculum.

PSHE

PSHE is taught through discussion, videos and worksheets. Topics include:

 

  • Working together
  • Choices
  • Living in a Diverse World
  • Children’s Rights – human rights
  • Body Changes (Sex Ed) – linked to science
  • Healthy Lifestyles – linked to science
  • Food and Nutrition – linked to science
  • Citizenship
  • How do rules and laws affect me.
  • Substance Misuse

ART

Art is taught as a separate subject by KS3 staff.

SWIMMING

Lessons are provided at Seymour Leisure Centre. This consists of a half hour lesson once a week. Pupils are taught dependant on ability. Currently pupils aim to achieve Personal Survival and swimming Improvement Awards.
