Sylvia Young Theatre School

Part Time Classes

Welcome to the Part-Time Training Programme at SYTS.

We are dedicated to delivering high-quality part-time performing arts training for students aged 4 to 18 years.
Classes take place on Thursday evenings and Saturdays at our Central London location: 1 Nutford Place, W1.

Each term focusses on structured, skills-based training and includes:

Term 1 - September
Training
Providing outstanding training in singing, drama, and dance for students aged 4 to 18.

Term 2 - January
Themed term
During the January term, each age group explores a central theme that runs across all three disciplines—singing, drama, and dance. Using this theme as a foundation, classes will spend part of the term preparing for a special class presentation, which will be shared with families on Parents’ Open Day.

Term 3 - April
Certificate term
At the conclusion of the summer term, all students receive Certificates of Achievement in recognition of their dedication and commitment to their training at Sylvia Young Theatre School.

General Information

Our Approach
At Sylvia Young Theatre School, we focus on high-quality training rather than productions or formal exams. Instead, parents and carers are invited to observe classes towards the end of each term, offering a chance to see the progress and work their child has been involved in.

Our part-time school is staffed by teachers from our full-time programme, as well as professionals with current or previous experience in the performing arts industry.

Classes are designed to support vocational development through expert training, while fostering confidence, communication skills, and creativity—all within a friendly, informal, and encouraging environment.

Age groups:
4–6 years (primary classes)
7–10 years
11–13 years
14–18 years

Some classes are marked 'selected'. Unfortunately, new students cannot apply for these classes until they have been assessed and invited to join them.

Classes:

Drama
Drama classes are based on improvisation and general stagecraft. These lessons develop acting skills through devising scenes and creating characters. Some script work will be introduced.

Singing
Singing classes aim to develop technique and repertoire and cover both popular music of the moment and musical theatre.

Dance
Commercial dance is a mix of hip-hop, jazz and street dance. Routines are energetic and use popular music of the day. Jazz classes offer a mix of traditional styles of jazz dance on stage. These classes aim to develop style, technique and performance skills. Primary dance classes offer a combination of Jazz Dance and Tap. Tap classes cover all areas from beginner to advanced tap. Classes aim to develop students' rhythm, accent accuracy, style and technique. Street Dance classes are based on high-energy movements and combinations of the latest hip-hop and pop music.
